Headrush Campervan

Renting a self contained campervan in New Zealand is a unique adventure. Here are 10 things you need to know when renting a camper in NZ:

  • It’s one of the best ways to explore the land of the long white cloud.

Campervanning is one of the best ways to experience New Zealand, so plan your itinerary carefully. Do your homework and map out your destinations, rest stops and campsites beforehand so you don’t get overwhelmed or sidetracked.

  • Drive the NZ way

New Zealand is a roadtrip-friendly country, but driving can still be a challenge, especially if you are used to driving on the right side of the road. But there’s no need to stress. Once you’ve gotten the hang of driving on the left side, the rest of your campervan trip should be a breeze. We include free guidebooks and maps with every rental so you can explore the country without worries.

  • Know which type of campervan is for you

There are a lot of different kinds of campervans out there, so make sure to choose one that best suits your needs. Do you want a self-contained vehicle or a standard campervan? Find out more about our fleet here.

  • Price depends on season

Campervan hire prices change with the season, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Expect higher rental costs in the summer and lower prices in the shoulder or off-season.

  • Don’t forget to include ferry costs in your budget

If you’re keen on driving from the north island to the south island, make sure to factor in ferry costs in your budget. Ferry costs will mostly depend on the size of your vehicle— the bigger the campervan, the higher the price. You can, however, get cheaper deals if you book the ferry earlier, or if you choose an evening trip.

  • Fuel up!

Aside from ferry costs, don’t forget to include fuel costs in your budget, too! A full tank of unleaded petrol will cost you around NZ$140 or around NZ$2.30
per litre.

  • Beware the younger driver surcharge and other hidden fees

Some companies will charge you extra if you’re a driver under 25 years old while others will offer “cheap” deals that come with a lot of restrictions and hidden charges. Steer clear away from these rental services. At Escape we have a no hidden charges policy so you can rest assured that you always get what you pay for.

  • Our campervans comes with heaps of freebies!

You don’t have to pack everything in but the kitchen sink – most of that is already taken cared of. Our campervans already come with a full queen sized bed, bedding, picnic chairs, a cooler, kitchenware and more.

  • Make sure the rental includes insurance!

Aside from sleep and kitchen essentials, make sure that your rental also includes a comprehensive vehicle insurance coverage. You don’t want to worry about van repairs while on vacation.

  • Freedom camping is a myth…at least in most areas

Contrary to popular belief, you can’t just park your campervan and spend the night anywhere. New Zealand does enforce some strict freedom camping policies to protect the environment. If you plan on freedom camping, make sure that your vehicle is fully self-contained and that you’re camping in areas that allow freedom camping in the first place.
